Now it’s time for Gali to discover Lake Atitlán, Guatemala, often called one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Her journey begins with a shuttle from Antigua Guatemala to Panajachel—or Pana, as the locals call it. Panajachel is a lively town and the main transportation hub for Lake Atitlán tours.
As the shuttle winds down from the highlands, the view suddenly opens: a volcanic lake that mirrors the sky. Across the horizon, three volcanoes rise in majesty—Volcán San Pedro, Volcán Atitlán, and Volcán Tolimán—welcoming her into this magical region.
First Impressions of Panajachel

By the time she arrives at lake level, Gali is enchanted. The streets of Panajachel, Guatemala buzz with vendors, travelers, and locals in vibrant Mayan clothing. The colors pop brilliantly against the backdrop of the volcanic landscape. Her shuttle drops her off on the famous Calle Santander, the heart of Panajachel.
Calle Santander is a bustling street lined with restaurants, bars, and craft vendors—a hub within a hub. Gali strolls through, savoring the energy. She finds a hand-woven Mayan bag in deep blue, decorated with a green and red quetzal, Guatemala’s national bird. With her new treasure at her side, she follows Santander straight to the lakeshore.
The Sublime Beauty of Lake Atitlán

At the water’s edge, Gali finally sees Lake Atitlán in full. The sight is breathtaking. Sublime is the only word that comes to her mind—a beauty too great for language.
She recently learned that Lake Atitlán is a volcanic caldera, formed by an ancient supervolcano eruption thousands of years ago. Now it’s a deep, shimmering basin, surrounded by Maya villages and volcanoes. Gazing at the lake, Gali feels a powerful connection to the earth, losing all sense of time.
But adventure awaits. “Time to catch some grub and do my ATV tour,” she smiles.
ATV Tour to Santa Catarina Palopó

Thanks to Gali’s Tours and Travels, she already has her ATV experience booked. Revving up, she follows her guide through winding roads and along a cliffside with panoramic lake views. Her destination: Santa Catarina Palopó, one of the most unique Lake Atitlán villages.
The town is famous for its brightly painted houses, decorated in blue patterns inspired by traditional weaving designs—echoing the colors of the bag she just bought. Here, life feels more traditional. Locals speak Kaqchikel Maya, one of the 22 Mayan languages still alive in Guatemala. Where Panajachel is international and bustling, Santa Catarina Palopó is peaceful, rooted in Maya heritage and culture.
Gali tours the town, learning about its history, textiles, and traditions. She returns to Panajachel with a deeper appreciation for Guatemala’s cultural richness and the many colors of humanity.
Nightlife in Panajachel

As night falls, Gali isn’t done yet. She meets fellow travelers at Pana Rock, one of the most popular bars in Panajachel. Live music fills the air, Gallos (Guatemala’s famous beer) flow freely, and new friendships spark easily. Dancing and laughter carry her through the night.
It’s the perfect ending to her first day at Lake Atitlán. Tomorrow promises another adventure—paragliding over Lake Atitlán. She tells herself not to drink too many Gallos, but in the magic of this place, joy wins out.
